  8. │                        WHAT IS A VIDEO NOTCH FILTER ?                       │
  9. │                                                                             │
  10. │     The pictures and  sounds  on  your TV  are carried there by signals.    │
  11. │     Each signal travels down it's own path, or channel.  A notch filter     │
  12. │     is used to  block  the  path  of an unwanted signal.  This prevents     │
  13. │     the  signal  from  delivering  its  information  to  our TV screen.     │
  14. │     The  filter  acts  as  sort  of  an  "Electronic Roadblock"  to the     │
  15. │     unwanted signal, while allowing all others to pass freely.              │
  16. │                           USES OF A NOTCH FILTER.                           │

  18. │                                                                             │
  19. │     This  function  is useful for parental censoring of Adult Channels.     │
  20. │     Even if  scrambled  by  the  cable  company,  they  may be somewhat     │
  21. │     watchable.   This  is not the  case when a  notch  filter is  used.     │
  22. │     The  notch  filter  may  be  used to block the  path of an unwanted     │
  23. │     channel's signal.  The signal then cannot carry its  picture to the     │
  24. │     TV screen, and the channel is ELIMINATED.                               │

  26. │                  TO ELIMINATE MILD OR SEVERE INTERFERENCE.                  │

  28. │     Interference  occurs  when  some  unwanted  signal  gets  into  the     │
  29. │     path of the desired signal.   As a result,  both signals  reach the     │
  30. │     TV screen.  One carries the  clear picture you want, but  the other     │
  31. │     brings along unwelcome  interference.  A notch  filter  may be used     │
  32. │     to  block  the  path  of  the  unwanted signal,  while allowing the     │
  33. │     desired signal to pass freely.  As  a result,  the  interference is     │
  34. │     removed and all you see is the clear picture.                           │

  36. │  ║                          UNWANTED SIGNALS                             ║  │
  37. │  ║                                                                       ║  │
  38. │  ║  Unwanted signals may find their way into  your  TV  in  many  ways.  ║  │
  39. │  ║  Some ways  are  unintentional.   Ham  Radio  operators  create them  ║  │
  40. │  ║  by using their  radios quite by accident, and there are many  other  ║  │
  41. │  ║  ways to  introduce  interference accidently. Sometimes interference  ║  │
  42. │  ║  is put in the path of a signal to block it, as we discussed earlier. ║  │
  43. │  ║  In fact, your local cable company probably uses it to block certain  ║  │
  44. │  ║  channels  they  want you to  pay additional  money to  receive (HBO, ║  │
  45. │  ║  SHOWTIME,  CINAMAX,  ect). To remove this interference, they either  ║  │
  46. │  ║  install a  NOTCH FILTER,  or turn on  the one in your converter box  ║  │
  47. │  ║  by remote control.                                                   ║  │

  49. │                               THE LIMITATIONS                               │
  50. │                                                                             │
  51. │     Notch filters can do many good things,  but there  are limitations:     │
  52. │     1) they can't fix every type of "interference".                         │
  53. │     2) It would be illegal to use them to remove the cable company's        │
  54. │        intentional interference  ( Although they can!! ).                   │
  55. │                                  THE TEST                                   │

  57. │   │ The filter CAN allow normal reception of a channel that is presently │  │
  58. │   │ unwatchable  if ...                                                  │  │

  60. │   │ 1) There  is  an unusual pattern  on the screen, which  partially or │  │
  61. │   │    completely hides the picture.                                     │  │
  62. │   │ 2) This pattern looks the same on  the left half of the screen as it │  │
  63. │   │    does on  the  right  half, at all  times (Zig zag lines or snow). │  │
  64. │   │ 3) The  patern is  accompanied  by an unusual sound.  This sound may │  │
  65. │   │    be a  humming, buzzing,  shrill,  alternating,  or garbled sound. │  │
